Look upon Christ. In Him there is an unbreakable knot between our human nature and His deity. God put on flesh in the person of Christ Jesus. In this incarnation our nature, bodies, and souls, are in a spiritual way conjoined to the body and soul of Christ. Because He became us, we are in a mystical way united to Him. Christ’s incarnation has drawn out our soul to union and communion and the participation of His glory. This has always been His goal: union, for us to be married to Him, He as our bridegroom and we as His redeemed bride. His work has secured this marriage union.
Jesus is the sum of all things: the purpose and the plan, the principle and the promise, the provision and the possession, the means and the end. He shows the way, and He is the way. His incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension is our entry. His flesh is the doorway into the very presence of God. We live from the reality of His finished work on the cross. Jesus already accomplished our salvation wholly and completely.
The apostle Paul said “our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;” Romans 6:6 NASB
We are no longer sinners. We have become a new creation in Christ Jesus! We have been completely united to Him. He fully and entirely destroyed our old self. This means that all our negativity, all our alienation, all our ignorance, all our pain, all our darkness, and all our evil is defeated. Our body of sin has been done away with because of His finished work upon the cross. We no longer relate to God based on our old man. We relate to God through the New Man: Christ Jesus!
“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB
He became everything we were, so we could become everything He is. We have been united to Him. We have received the completed work of His cross! He purchased our freedom from sin and gave us the gift of righteousness: right relationship, restored union. Our union to Him happens real time. It is a present reality.
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20 NASB
We were past tense co-crucified with Him on the cross 2000 years ago, but we are also presently co-crucified. It isn’t just a historic event, but a present daily reality. We were united with Him in His incarnation so we would be mingled together with God, but we also are presently united today. We were crucified with Him so the body of sin would be done away with, but we are also presently crucified. We rose with Him on the third day so we would walk in His life, and we are also risen with Him today. We ascended with Him on the hill to the throne of God to have eternal communion, and we are presently ascended and seated in the heavenly places in Christ today. His entire redemptive work of the incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, has secured for us an eternal union with God.
